Myth: A colon cleanse (or colonic) will rejuvenate your system, help detoxify your body or help shed a few pounds.

(Bacteria not to scale)

TRUTH:

Supposedly, this is based on the idea that foods (eaten together or simply the accumulation over time) sit in your intestines and rot, causing  a toxin build-up.  And in only 1 week you can be rid of all these harmful toxins (for only 5 easy payments of $29.95)!  I hate to say it, but it doesn’t work like that.

The beauty of the human body is that it is truly an amazing machine.  It works to clean itself (everybody poops)!  The liver, kidney and spleen filter toxins; the colon has great bacteria and a lining that prevents the absorption of unwanted substances out of the body and it sheds cells every few days.  Research doesn’t support that any kind of cleanses or colonics actually improve health.

Plus, there are risks!  ‘Natural’ cleanses don’t mean much – they’re not regulated in any way so any claims about purity, potency or safety aren’t checked.  There are often side effects such as bowel perforation, vomiting, nausea, dizziness (dehydration), or potential medication interactions.

BOTTOM LINE: If you’re getting a colonoscopy, a “cleanse” is absolutely in order – the gastroenterologist needs to see everything very clearly.  Plus, it’s a little gross if you don’t.   Otherwise, don’t waste your time, money or effort.  What you eat has more of an effect on your colonic health: eat fiber, drink fluids, and only have alcohol in moderation.
