GM Crops: the results are in and you’re probably going to die

If you read my blog regularly, you know I hate extreme claims like “you’re going to die”  (which is why I inserted ‘probably’), but I’m not joking.  The first long term (lifetime) study examining the effects of long term GM Crop consumption is complete and the results are dismal.

I have one more qualification before I share the results of this study.  If you’re a regular reader, you also know how frequently I love to use the phrase “rats are not humans” when citing studies that are done in animals and researchers generalize the results to humans.  However, I’m totally serious when I say: thankfully, this study was done in rats rather than humans.  I have never uttered those words before.

Ok, now I’ll get to the point:  A recent study published in the Journal of Biological Sciences fed rats the 3 most popularly grown varieties of genetically modified corn to test the effects of long term consumption.  Based on their findings, researchers concluded that consuming these varieties pose grave health risks and they’re calling for an immediate ban on cultivating these grains.

Specifically, the effects in rats were:

  • Up to 50% of males and 70% of females suffered premature death.
  • Rats that drank trace amounts of Roundup (at levels legally allowed in the water supply) had a 200% to 300% increase in large tumors.
  • Rats fed GM corn and traces of Roundup (an herbicide) suffered severe organ damage including liver damage and kidney damage.
  • Up to 80% of the females had mammary (breast) tumors by the end of the study (after 90 days).

Think you’re not eating that corn?  WRONG!  Monsanto produced NK603 (one of the three varieties tested), is grown across North America and is in your corn based breakfast cereal, corn tortillas, and corn snack chips.

And, on a more general note: how much evidence do we need to collect before policymakers pay attention?!  I agree with researchers that these crops should be banned.  Allowing Monsanto to take over the food system with GM crops is clearly dangerous.  If the above pictures disturb and scare you, electing Mitt Romney may be hazardous to your health, as he’s been working closely with Monsanto since the 70′s.  Maybe Obama isn’t perfect – he’s not banning GM crops either, but at least he’s pushing for foods containing these crops to be labeled.  Maybe that’s government control, but to me, that’s the government arming the public with knowledge and empowering us to make educated decisions.
