Most Versatile Kitchen Gadgets

Personalized branders are one of my favorite fun cooking gifts to give.

People often ask me what I have in my kitchen that I can’t live without.  My answer is usually one of the basics: good knife set or heavy bottomed pots and pans.  But recently, it got me thinking – other than barebones necessities, what are the more luxurious items that I’ve come to rely on?

I’m not going to suggest specific brands but do your research before purchasing any kitchen appliance.  The only reason to buy a cheap version of something is to test it to see if you’ll use a big boy version.  I did this with immersion blenders.  My first one was about $10, had one speed, and broke shortly after I got it but it helped me realize that spending $75 would be worth it.

Anyway, here are my Top 5 Most Versatile Kitchen Gadgets:

  1. Coffee Grinder:  Coffee grinders not only grind coffee (obviously), but spices, herbs, grains, flax seeds, other seeds, nuts, or crackers and cookies.
  2. Toaster Oven: Toaster ovens rock.  They toast any breads or muffins, they bake cookies, brownies, casseroles or meats.  They make the cheese on top of French onion soup melt-y and delicious.  Plus, you can save a lot of money on your energy bill just by switching from using your oven to a toaster oven.
  3. Panini Press:  If you’re going to get a Panini press, make sure that it’s one that has a floating hinge and can lie flat (which provides 2 extra cooking surfaces).  Many panini presses come with a flat griddle and a grill pan so you can cook everything from pressing sandwiches or wraps to pancakes to burgers.  You can even do desserts!  Good investment if you ask me.
  4. Immersion Blender: This thing does everything.  It makes smoothies and shakes; it makes batters, pesto, dressings, sauces, dips, blended soups, and spreads.  And that’s only with the blade! If you get an immersion blender with additional attachments, it also whips and whisks (though those are the same thing, they sounds better as two functions)!

And, the most versatile piece of kitchen equipment (drum roll please…)

  1. Food Processor! Ladies and gentlemen, food processors can chop, slice, dice, puree, blend, knead, emulsify, shred, grate, mince, grind, and pulverize.  Some even have attachments to roll pasta dough!  Is there anything it can’t do?! Yes, which is why you need the first 4 gadgets.
