Recipe: 10 Ideas to Flavor your Oatmeal

Simple cheesy oats with salt and pepper

Oatmeal is probably the most popular hot breakfast cereal in the country, but many people buy prepackaged, pre-flavored instant packets.  All that extra processing and packaging adds to the cost but subtracts from the nutritional value.

If you currently purchase the pre-flavored oatmeal packets, then you should  consider this: in only one or two simple steps, your oatmeal could be cheaper and tastier without adding a lot of calories.

½ cup (one serving) of dry, Old Fashioned Quaker Oats oatmeal contains 150 calories.  It has 4 grams of fiber, which is almost 1.5x as much as the instant packets.  Plus, when you purchase food that is already in pre-portioned packets, it’s gonna cost you.  Don’t think so?  Here’s the cost comparison; for one serving of oatmeal…

…pre-portioned packets of maple/brown sugar: $0.50

…large container (42 oz.) of Old Fashioned Quaker Oats:  $0.17

Let’s say you have oatmeal 3 times per week.  That’s a difference of $51.48 per year!  $50!! On oatmeal!  Instead of wasting money, flavor or calories, try these ideas with the cash you’ll save from buying the larger container:

  • 52 Calories: 1 tablespoon of maple syrup, a pinch of cardamom
  • 75 Calories: 1 apple, diced and a pinch of nutmeg
  • 85 Calories: ½ cup sliced peaches, 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, 1 tablespoon sliced almonds
  • 91 Calories: ½ cup sliced strawberries (frozen works well) and 1 tablespoon honey
  • 104 Calories: 2 tablespoons of fruit preserves (i.e. apricot, blackberry, mixed berry, etc.)
  • 107 Calories: 1 small banana (sliced), 1 teaspoon maple syrup, and a pinch of cinnamon
  • 125 Calories: 2 tablespoons raisins, 2 tablespoons chopped pecans, 1 teaspoon brown sugar

  • 80 Calories: ¼ cup low fat cheese and 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 90 Calories: ¼ cup salsa and ¼ cup diced avocado
  • 90 Calories: ¾ cup mushrooms (sautéed) and 1/8 cup gruyere cheese
  • 100 Calories: 1 medium tomato (chopped), ¼ cup part-skim mozzarella, a pinch of oregano
  • 101 Calories: 1 tablespoon almond butter
  • 110 Calories: ½ cup marinara sauce
  • 150 Calories: ¼ cup reduced fat cheddar cheese, 1 poached egg, 1/8 cup sliced scallions

My personal favorite is cheesy oatmeal but if you’re looking for an easy, at-the-office breakfast, it’s easy to keep oats and honey in my desk and frozen fruit in the freezer.  Even on the days that I’m running late, I don’t end up paying several bucks for a breakfast sandwich!

Lastly, these flavorings aren’t just limited to oatmeal!  You can try this with any hot breakfast cereal; though obviously I prefer the whole grains, such as a 10-grain blend, buckwheat, or kamut.
