Recipe: Spiced Plum Compote

Use this recipe as a topping for yogurt, dessert, french toast, or enjoy it on its own!
Plums come in a variety of colors (green, yellow, red, purple, blue-black, amber) and you could easily make this recipe with any of them.  There are about 100 varieties of plums available around the United States, and the best, sweetest plums are available right now at farmers markets.

Spiced Plum Compote

Serves 6

  • 6 black or red plums – halved and pitted
  • 4 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 2 cinnamon sticks (or 1 teaspoon cinnamon)
  • 4-5 whole allspice berries (or ½ teaspoon ground allspice)
  • 1 cardamom pod (or ½ teaspoon ground cardamom)
  • 2-3 whole cloves (or ¼ teaspoon ground cloves)
  • Scrapings of 1 vanilla bean (or 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract)

Place cinnamon sticks, allspice berries, cardamom pod, and cloves inside an empty tea bag or make one from cheesecloth.  Combine plums, maple syrup, vanilla bean scrapings and spice bag in a medium saucepan.  Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and cover.  Cook 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.  Remove cover and cook 5 more minutes or until plums thicken.  Remove the spice bag before cooling.
